Sooooooo....Buster is still not here. I had an appointment this morning to make sure my fluid levels were normal and to monitor his heart rate. Thankfully everything was perfect. However we had a minor disaster with Olive during the appointment - but I'll let daddy blog about that. Don't worry - she is totally fine. Mommy, however, is having a pretty rough go of it. Crossing my fingers the baby will be here tomorrow.

Baby Update
Baby Buster has yet to make an appearance. In fact - I haven't had any contractions at all today. I thought for sure he was coming last night - especially after eating the salad. But around midnight the contractions stopped. It looks like this little guy is waiting for my birthday.....

"The Salad"
A few hours ago we ventured into Studio City to have "the salad" at Caioti Cafe. It worked with Olive ..... so I'm hoping it will work with Buster! I just want him here before my birthday.

Tough Day
I'm not going to lie - yesterday was a really rough day. It wasn't like Olive was out of control or had an epic tantrum - it was just tough. Maybe it's because it was Andrew's first day back to work in 3 weeks and I was on my own with a rambunctious toddler? Or, that I felt like I had 100 things to do and a little munchkin that demanded all of my energy and attention. Or maybe it's just because I'm a week or two away from giving birth and my body is so tired I can barely move. Life seems so much easier with an extra set of hands. By the end of the day every part of my body was uncomfortable and in need of some major TLC.
* Today, however was great. We saw Buster this morning (will post pictures later) and went for a long walk with Olive to look for ladybugs (we found 15). She picked out what she wanted to wear (princess dress, ladybug rainboots, sweater, and umbrella) and I have to say it's times like these when I am so thankful for the life that I have. Regardless of how tired I am feeling.

UCLA - Ronald Reagan Hospital
Here is the thing - I LOVED giving birth at Saint John's in Santa Monica. Unfortunately with our new insurance we are with UCLA now. At first I was a little worried since I had such a great experience at our old hospital. However, after our tour of the Ronald Reagan Medical Center - I think I'm sold. Not only do they offer massages for new moms, but there is also tuxedo-attired "food ambassadors" who deliver room service to your room. Apparently the food is similar to that of a 5 star hotel. Um...what? They had me at "food ambassadors".

Why Hello Buster!
We had our weekly doctors visit yesterday and were able to see Buster's face! I normally don't like the 3D imaging - but I think he's pretty cute. They estimated that he weighs a little over 6 lbs.

Buster's Baby Shower
Even though it isn't customary to have a second baby shower - I had one for Buster this weekend at the new house. It was not only a way for me to celebrate with friends but also a chance to show them all our new digs!
Of course my mom and Carolyn helped make the day extra special. I'm not sure I could have done it without them! The food was delicious and it was so great to see all my friends.
Even though I hoped no one would bring gifts - I was showered with them! There were so many adorable things including sleepers, onesies, a diaper cake, shoes, preppy outfits, rain boots from Hawaii, a double stroller, and a home-made Buster hat - just to name a few. I scored - big time!
Shawn even made this Buster cake from scratch! Isn't it adorable? It was just as delicious too.
I think it was Olive's favorite thing - she couldn't stop eating the sprinkled candies on it.
I love my family. It's hard to believe there is going to be an addition to our little unit soon! All in all, it was a great day spent with loved ones. Thank you to everyone who came and made it so special!
* And a special thanks to my sweet hubby for taking 5 kids bowling so we all could have some fun!

Pimpin Ain't Easy (Andrew's title - not mine)
With this pregnancy it's been a lot more difficult to document my weekly photos. I tend to miss a week here and there - and last week was no exception. I had Andrew snap a photo of me tonight on my phone just so I could do a blog entry.
No one ever said being pregnant is easy. Obviously having a little creature growing and moving around inside you for 9 months is a little uncomfortable. Maybe I was spoiled with Olive because I don't remember her giving me any trouble at all. Or maybe I just don't remember the bad parts? Regardless - this current pregnancy is kicking my butt. I feel tired all the time and I have aches in places I wasn't even aware of. My only hope is that Buster is getting all his aggression out on the inside, so when he pops out he will be the sweetest little boy in the world.

Milk & Cookies
Lately, Olive and I have gotten into the habit of having milk and cookies before bed. I blame it on the girl scouts, but secretly I think it is Buster.

What's in a Name?
(note: This 3D image was taken of the baby a few weeks ago. I normally don't like these sorts of pictures because the babies look so strange. I couldn't resist posting this one because I thought he sort of looked cute!)

Little Buster
I had a doctors appointment today for my glucose test and they surprised me with an impromptu ultra-sound. Our little guy is getting so big!

Confirmation - It's a Boy
On Monday morning we had our nuchal folds ultrasound. Basically it looks at the neck area of the baby to see how much fluid is there. A higher amount of fluid sometimes means there is a higher risk for Downs Syndrome. In any case - our baby was perfect. As was everything else - his heart, his brain, and if you look at the picture above - he is 100% boy.

buster's first goal
from what i understand after reading countless sports biographies, the great athletes start showing their talent early in life. many excel in high school, some even in elementary school. so by my estimation, if little buster is starting to show signs of greatness at 13 weeks, by the time he turns two we should probably start interviewing sports agents.
he will be unstoppable!

the results are in...
i can tell by the number of votes in kim's poll that there is a groundswell of interest in the sex of our new progeny. well the long, long wait is over, we have the doctor results...
but first lets reflect on the amazing progress modern medicine has achieved in the past 30 years. when my mom wanted to find out if she was pregnant with me she had to go to a doctor for a test that involved killing a rabbit. fast forward to today when a doctor took a vial of blood from kim and can map the new little one's dna with 99% certainty.
but without further delay - the news you've all been waiting for... we're having a BOY!
(below is an artistic rendering of what little buster will most likely look like)

1st Trimester Blues
To be honest - this pregnancy hasn't really agreed with me. I keep telling myself that I felt this sick with Olive, but the truth is - I don't remember it ever being this bad. For one thing I have no energy, and even worse - I can't sleep at night. Throw a rambunctious toddler in there and it seems a lot harder than before. Thankfully I'm almost into my second trimester - which means I should be feeling better soon! Believe me, I'm ready for a night on the town.

Girl or Boy?
Earlier this week Andrew and I had an appointment for genetic counseling. Although I was considered "older" when I had Olive - we never sat down with anyone to give them a complete family history. Interestingly enough they have a new blood test that can detect chromosomal abnormalities - specifically downs syndrome. I, of course, wanted it immediately. As an added bonus, the test can also detect the sex of the baby! Basically in a few days I will know if we are having a boy or a girl!

Labor Flashback
Andrew and I were cleaning the house this morning and found this fan that we bought for labor. Let's just say this - today was the first time it had been turned on. At least for the next baby we will know exactly what items we need. A fan isn't one of them.

Birthing and other Adventures
It is hard to describe exactly how amazing the whole birthing experience was. Even with the few things we had against us - I wouldn't have changed a thing.
It was apparent at dinner on Friday night that I was having consistent contractions. I still wasn't positive that it was the real deal, but it certainly seemed like it! After arriving home we decided to just chill out and see what happened. Around midnight the contractions grew stronger and I could no longer sleep. I even had to start using my breathing techniques! The only comfortable place was in Olives room so I rocked in the glider while daddy slept on the floor. After about 3-4 hours, with the contractions coming every 2 - 3 minutes, we thought it was best to head to the hospital. I took a shower and couldn't even be bothered with picking out an outfit so I settled on something comfy. (For the record, I never wear sweats)
After checking into the hospital, we called my mom and Andrews mom so they could head over. We weren't sure how long or short the whole thing would last, but wanted them to be there. The contractions at that point started coming long and hard so I used the one breathing technique that worked for me - eyes shut and slow easy breaths. Of course our nurse thought I was crazy for not doing an epidural right away, but I wanted to see how far I could get. It didn't take very long since around 9am I was utterly exhausted and only at 4cm. Between the lack of sleep and the consistent pain of the contractions I finally couldn't resist. Thankfully our anesthesiologist, Eduardo, was amazing. He was the sweetest man and continued checking on me throughout the entire day. Let me just say this: I do not know why anyone would NOT go for an epidural. I could still feel my legs and feel the tightening of the contractions - but without any of the pain. It was truly amazing and I would recommend it to everyone.
(note: the nurse that thought I was crazy for not doing the epidural was the same nurse that we had when we were first admitted into the hospital for the induction 2 weeks ago. She was the one that told our doctor that Olive's heart rate was decelerating which in turn lead to the pitocin, etc etc. Carolyn and my mom referred to her as "Nurse Ratched")
(note 2: when push came to shove "Nurse Ratched was actually very good and had our best interest at heart)
Thankfully after the epidural I was able to relax and rest up for the big event. Unfortunately I wasn't able to relax completely because the nurse kept commenting on how Olive's heart rate wasn't ideal. In the back of my mind I was worried I would end up with a C-Section and my birth plan would go out the window. Granted we ended up doing quite a few things that weren't in our birth plan. Our main thing was to go with the flow and that included being flexible.
After the epidural my contractions weren't getting much stronger so the nurse wanted to move things along and recommended starting a bit of pitocin. I was opposed to it at first and convinced her to let us see if the contractions got any stronger after an hour. After an hour or so of trying things on my own and not getting any further, we decided to go with a little pitocin. As soon as we started it my contractions kicked in and things started moving along very quickly.
Another unexpected thing was that we hadn't met the doctor on call. She was one of the only doctors we hadn't had an appointment with since she works primarily at Cedars. There is something a little nerve racking about not knowing the doctor who will most likely deliver your baby! When she came to check on me around 2pm, I knew we were in good hands. She was very sweet and gave me some good news - I was 6 centimeters dilated and thought I would deliver before 7pm. I decided to save up all of my energy for the delivery so I tried to rest some more. Even though I had the epidural I could still feel the contractions starting and stopping, just not the pain. And even better - I could still feel Olive moving inside of me!
At around 5:45pm the nurse checked me and asked us where we thought we were? I, being the more positive of parents, thought maybe 8 cm. Andrew thought 7 cm. It turned out we were almost at 10 and would be pushing in no time! I have to admit I was a little nervous but 45 minutes later we were ready! Since we didn't have any drama throughout the entire laboring process, Andrew thought it would be funny to do a picture where I was choking him. We took the above picture between pushes. Thirty minutes later Olive was out and in my arms. The doctor couldn't believe that it didn't take longer. She had told me only hours earlier that first time moms could take up to 3 hours to push. Um...not an athletically inclined Oliveira.
After holding her for a little while she had to go to the nursery to get cleaned up. Normally they do that in the delivery room, but there was an emergency with another baby and the nurse needed us to go to the nursery. Thankfully Daddy stayed with Olive and they assured me that they would be back soon. Unfortunately it took a lot longer than expected and after more than hour I wanted both Olive and Andrew back with me. The night nurse went to see what was taking so long and came back with both! I had already moved into my postpartum room and had anxious grandparents that wanted to see the baby.
Here is Grandma Carolyn and Grandma Rufer with Olive. They were both so excited to finally meet her! They had been patiently waiting all day.
And here I am with my new daughter. It seems so crazy that I am officially a mom. Olive is absolutely perfect.

better living through chemistry
no one has ever questioned kim's pain tolerance or her athletically inclined-ness. well, people may have questioned both of those assertions, but let me tell you, she has a very high pain threshold. earlier today her contractions were about 3 minutes apart lasting 45 seconds. she went on like that for 5 hours. that is 60 contractions that she rated 6-7 out of 10 on her pain scale. and didn't complain about it once.
when we were in the hospital they were concerned she would be over-tired for having to deal with that for another 10 hours. so they recommended she get an epidural. kim was against it because she knew she could stick out the pain, but eventually decided that saving energy for the end of the day was a good idea.
after making a new bff with the anesthesiologist, edwardo, kim was amazed by the epidural. i think her exact quote was, 'why would you bother with the pain when you can just have this? it's awesome.'
and there you have it. pain thresholds are great and all, but when you have chemistry on your side - you can't lose.
